Giff Hoyt (Charles Bronson) regenta un bar en la costa peruana a mediados de 1949. Además de evitar la ira de Beckdorff (Jason Robards), un peligroso ex-nazi convertido en el mafioso local, sus problemas aumentan cuando llega a Cabo Blanco, una bella francesa llamada Marie (Dominique Sanda). Marie busca respuestas sobre el destino de su esposo, un explorador de naufragios, ahogado accidentalmente mientras investigaba un barco hundido. Giff averigua que la muerte del explorador no fue fortuita y que el barco hundido está cargado con un gran tesoro demasiado tentador como para no tomar parte en la aventura.
