Kibédy Sándor, a painter, and Berényi Mária, a girl being educated in a convent and his model for a painting entitled Mária, are in love with each other. Due to a misunderstanding, their romance ends. Mária is off to her family's country estate, Kibédy is sets out on a journey abroad. Mária, although still in love with Kibédy, marries Ladányi Mihály, a landowner in her neighbourhood. A few years later Kibédy, now a famous singer, returns home. They meet, which is quite a shock for both Mária and her marriage. Her husband wants a divorce, she retires into a convent, trying to regain her spiritual peace as sister Mária.
