Bartha, a poor country inn keeper and his daughter, Zsóka, the local school mistress inherit a great wealth unexpectedly. According to the will they have to move into the pompous castle, where the servants receive with despise the new hosts who are accustomed to more modest conditions. István, the impoverished baron wants to improve his situation by conquering the rich heir, but he mistakes Zsóka a maiden servant. The girl exploits the misunderstanding and enters the baron's service as a maid. She explores the background of the deterioration of financial matters in the household. She discovers that the servicing staff are all doing the job of a thief. In the end, she pretends to have arrived from Switzerland and the baron recognizes his love in amazement.
