Roma. 1880. Gregorio Ferramonti ha decidido cerrar su panadería, un negocio familiar del que hasta ahora vivía toda su familia. Gracias a esta decisión ya puede decirles a sus dos hijos varones, Pippo y Mario y a su hija Teta, que deberán buscarse la vida por sus propios recursos. Pero también está Irene, la mujer de Pippo, una mujer preciosa, tímida y reservada que se ha propuesto hacerse con la herencia a toda costa. Para ello actúa con inteligencia, calculando cada paso que da y sus posibles consecuencias y así convence a los hermanos que deben impedir que su padre se vuelva a enamorar bajo el riesgo de perder la herencia. The charming intriguer Irene, played by Dominique Sanda, imparts a lesson in disguise and manipulation to the members of the Ferramonti family and outsmarts them. The problem is that it is not possible to identify and root for anyone in the film, as practically all the actors are controlled by base instincts, greed, and lack of consideration. However, it is a very well-crafted and well-cast costume drama set in the 19th century with a decent set design, and so I can easily recommend it to fans of historical spectacles. The ending is surprising, and without knowledge of the laws and prevailing morals of that time, it is difficult for a modern viewer to understand. It must be said that the creators did not bother to explain the fundamental twist to their audience. Overall impression: 70%.
