Rya-Rya lives out her miserable life among "statare", migrant rural labourers who were forced to travel from estate to estate working for their keep. Rya-Rya scandalizes her community by bathing in the nude. Spurned by her fiancé, she yields in desperation to the advances of a farm hand, Henrik, after a barn dance.
