El debut en el cine de Hitoshi Matsumoto fue el kaiju eiga o cine de monstruos gigantes japonés, género al que en “Big Man Japan” el director le da la vuelta. Protagonizada por el propio Matsumoto, que da vida a uno de sus prototipos favoritos: el hombre nipón de mediana edad, aburrido, huraño, casi miserable, colocado de pronto en una situación totalmente extrema, “Big Man Japan” marcó efectivamente el comienzo de una interesante colaboración entre Phantom Film, la productora de Matsumoto, y la multinacional japonesa Shochiku, la más antigua de las cinematográficas japonesas, pero siempre abierta a los nuevos talentos. At first glance basically a pretty boring mockumentary, but if you imagine the 大日本人 [“Big Japan"] without the 人 [“Man"], it becomes a story about the Empire of Japan and immediately takes on a new dimension. Still, I believe it's a rather hard film to digest.

The film is unoriginal, but that's its charm. It's a classic kaiju film where the fight scenes are actually an arena. But it's also a personal drama that is being filmed on camera like a reality show about one very extraordinary person. This is such a wonderfully offbeat film that I simply can't help but watch it with delight and rate it very highly. But you have to have the temperament for it.
