Sinopsis(1)
Phil (Carell) y Claire Foster (Fey) son una pareja sensata y agradable que reside, junto a sus dos hijos, en una casa situada a las afueras de New Jersey. Los Foster tienen por costumbre salir una noche a la semana, para reavivar la chispa de sus antiguas citas, y esa noche "especial" acuden siempre a la taberna Teaneck de la localidad. La conversación que entre ambos se suscita va derivando rápidamente de la charla trivial al rutinario y tedioso diálogo que suelen mantener a la hora de la cena en su propio hogar. Agotados por el trabajo y los hijos, sus citas "especiales" raras veces tienen éxito o algún tipo de acción y, mucho menos, romance. Después de saber que dos de sus mejores amigos otro matrimonio con hijos, residente también en la periferia de New Jersey se van a separar tras una vida similar a la suya, Phil y Claire empiezan a temer lo que les aguarda: una escenario de anodina indiferencia y la consiguiente separación. En un intento de escapar del piloto automático en su salida semanal, y con la esperanza de darle a sus vidas un mayor aliciente, Phil decide alterar el plan habitual y sorprender a Claire: llevándola a un flamante y muy popular restaurante de Manhattan. Sin embargo, no han hecho reserva. Deseosos de sentarse a la mesa antes de las doce de la noche, los Foster se hacen pasar por una pareja que tenía reserva y que no se ha presentado. ¿Qué daño podía haber en ello? Phil y Claire ahora son los Tripplehorn. Sin embargo, resulta que los verdaderos Tripplehorn son una pareja de ladrones que han robado a una gente muy peligrosa y que han sido atrapados por dos policías corruptos. Obligados a cenar apresuradamente, antes de acabar su risotto, Phil y Claire se dan cuenta enseguida de que su simulacro de cita conyugal para padres les ha salido singularmente mal, ya que se ven envueltos en una vorágine de violentas y peligrosas aventuras para salvar sus vidas y su matrimonio. An incredibly likeable and undemanding comedy. Sometimes you need to switch off and let yourself be entertained and that’s what Date Night is for. Needless to say, the film relies on Lemon’s brilliant comedic performance. 7/10

Bad actors, a stupid plot, and overall not a very funny comedy. I'm glad I'm over it!! Lately I’m wondering if I’m just biased against Mr. Steve Carell, but I don't feel any charisma from him.

Date Night is ultimately just an average comedy with undemanding humor, but it still has some advantages that give me positive feelings. A solid cast with professional acting performances, humor that never descends into the depths, and above all, its content appeals more to middle-aged viewers like myself. On one hand, it's an action comedy and there are plenty of those, but the other aspect that makes fun of marriage fatigue, the rushed pace of life, rituals, and stereotypes of middle-class couples in their forties is something I perfectly understand, and I find the film likable for the same reason teenagers find teen comedies likable, despite their problematic content. Overall impression: 55%.

Two and a half stars because Steve Carell and Tina Fey are good comedians, but they need a capable script too. I don't like this current trend of "let them improvise the whole film, they will surely come up with something funny if we didn't". Moreover, Date Night was directed by failed comedy specialist Shawn Levy, and it was certainly his idea to shoot over half the film with a frantically (and unnecessarily) shaky digital camera. Still, there are some funny moments - for example, the eternal bumping into open drawers, Carell's references to Mark Wahlberg without a shirt, or the truly original (definitely the most original scene in the film) car chase.

The one thing that truly stood out and didn't disappoint was the casting. However, the story felt naively silly, and I found myself unable to laugh at most of the supposed funny moments. The moments when the two main characters analyzed their relationship even left me bored. Thankfully, Taste and Whippit saved the day, and the absence of the Holbrook Grant t-shirt played a big part in my rating (that part was genuinely enjoyable). I can see how this film could be an entertaining comedy, but it definitely needs more work on the script. / Lesson learned: Want to have a peaceful and relaxed life? Use contraception.

Steve Carell and Tina Fey entertained me immensely here, and as a couple, they were a great match. The film also has other positives. First and foremost is the fact that there are great actors in both major and minor roles. It doesn't lack excellent humor and great scenes, especially those involving the married couple, which are well-executed and hit close to home.
