Peter Morgan (Eward G. Robinson) es un granjero de carácter duro, con una pierna de madera, que vive recluido en su hogar, junto a su hermana Ellen (Judith Anderson) y Meg (Allene Roberts), una hija adoptiva. Meg ya está en la adolescencia y se hace amiga de Nath (Lon McCallister), un compañero de instituto que comienza a trabajar en la granja de los Morgan. Un día a Nath se le hace tarde para volver a casa tras su jornada y Peter le advierte que es mejor que no atraviese el bosque de noche, ya que allí se encuentra una apartada casa roja a la que no debe acercarse. Pero desde tal advertencia la curiosidad de Nath se desborda hasta que un día él y Ellen se aventuran en el bosque. Al llegar cerca de la casa roja Meg recuerda parcialmente sucesos del pasado que le angustian. A ambos jóvenes todo les parece muy extraño hasta que comprenden que la casa roja encierra un oscuro secreto que es mejor no desvelar... (Filmin)

This atmosphere! And actually, nothing is happening. People are sitting at dinner, the wind is howling outside, and you realize that something is not right here. There is no need for frantic cuts, unnecessary sound effects, although the film cannot avoid them. When there is peace, it is the most terrifying thing that can happen. What will come next? That uneasiness, in and of itself, is simply amazing. And then the scene in the forest comes... Black and white suits the film, especially when it is properly utilized. Unfortunately, the narrative of the film quickly loses momentum, and it is balanced only by good acting performances and occasionally returning great atmosphere.
