The character Tondelayo became a key role in Hedy Lamarr's American career due to her animalism and temperament. She was so far removed from what has become famous, such as the quoting of the sentence: "I just stood there and looked stupid," by which Hedy summed up the typical method of working in Hollywood studios. It was a risk early in the production, but in the end, White Cargo was more than well received and allowed Hedy to transform her glamor into a much more sophisticated form with a large dose of eroticism.
