During the time of Inquisition and slavery, Sierva Maria wants to know what kisses taste like. She is 13 years old, daughter of aristocrats but raised by their African slaves living in colonial Cartagena de Indias. When a rabid dog bites her, the bishop declares she is possessed and entrusts Cayetano, his pupil, with her exorcism. Long, dragging shots that aren’t completely off-topic, even though they drag worse than a broken plough. But here they’re set in a story that you’ll either accept or you’ll suffer through it for the whole hour and a half. I must admit that I just suffered through it. Mostly because I was sickened by all the things that the Church could get away with at a time when it was the sovereign power and everything else was subordinate. But also, because everything that happened in there could have been trimmed down to twenty minutes.
