Bailarín profesional proveniente de una familia de artistas, el director belga Gust Van den Berghe hizo de esta cinta protagonizada por actores no profesionales que padecen síndrome de Down su arriesgado proyecto de tesis. Inspirada en una pieza teatral escrita en 1924 por Félix Timmermans, esta parábola sobre la caridad traicionada por la perversión de los ideales gira en torno a tres vagabundos que, perdidos en el bosque, creen presenciar el nacimiento del niño Jesús. I'm not sure if the symbolism of the film was so deep that I didn't understand it, or whether it really was based on such a simple principle. Then, of course, the consistent super-realism and eccentricity seem a little self-purposeful. Visually there are beautiful scenes, their connection with music is excellent, but the poetic speeches and the overall mood of this pastoral kind of missed the mark for me. I saw it as a parable of faith and hope and their different forms. The choice of people with Down syndrome is interesting and corresponds to the overall touch of the black-and-white parable... As much as I love movies like this, Little Baby Jesus of Flandr didn't captivate me...
