Sinopsis(1)

I am not at all surprised that this film triggered a razzle in the US in 1996. It opened a series of topics that aren’t very talked about in the US even today. And not in a careless way… they immediately set it off in bulk and together in one comprehensive movie. The life of Larry Flynt simply wasn’t for prudes. It isn’t for nothing that I have known since childhood that Hustler has always been the most rad magazine on the market. It is then true that nowadays it probably won’t surprise anyone anymore, because today, even a ten-year-old kid at primary school already knows what fisting is, but back in the day, it was a massacre. And I am so glad that Miloš Forman was behind the hysteria. It’s really nice to see that he didn’t hesitate to seize the opportunity and made Hollywood pretty angry back then. Nobody dares to do so today. ()

inglés How else to make a biopic about a controversial person than controversially and with taste (or lack thereof)? Forman succeeded brilliantly while not forgetting all the ingredients that make a good film. The performances are brilliant, the direction is superb and the script is excellent. ()

inglés The life themes of Forman's films are the position of defined personalities within the system and especially the search for personal freedom within a liberal society. Where are the limits of acceptable human behavior, where does freedom of speech end, and whether it should be set at all? In The People vs. Larry Flynt, he continued what he started in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and continued in the musical Hair. While his previous films received enthusiastic applause from critics and audiences, The People vs. Larry Flynt faced harsh criticism from multiple sides. It came from both the influential Christian right and the equally influential feminist movement, as both groups organized furious demonstrations and disrupted the distribution of the film. The film sparked great controversy and Forman was left significantly isolated this time. Honestly, the real Larry Flynt is an extremely repulsive character, whom Forman, despite all efforts to capture from many angles in the most diverse perspective, humanized inappropriately. This was also aided by the fact of personal friendship between the director and Larry Flynt. Woody Harrelson's outstanding performance in the lead role also contributed to this humanization. The real Flynt was not so much a victim of his passions as he was an excellent unscrupulous businessman. From a directorial standpoint, it is an extraordinary film with a great cast, and even Courtney Love as an uncontrollable bullet of American pop culture performs very well. And why not, when she essentially plays herself? Edward Norton is perfectly cast and the supporting actors around the main stars deliver reliable performances. Only the pathos at the end of the film is unnecessary. But that is related to what I suggested above. It is not a bad film at all, but for its content, I have a considerably colder attitude toward it compared to Forman's other films. Overall impression: +- 80%. ()

inglés Now a classic with the legendary directorial signature of the master, where every second shot is similar to those of Amadeus, and you pretty soon know you're going to get a meaty study of a personality that was as controversial almost as much as he was rich. Factually presented, entertaining and fresh, that's how we like these stories of rise and fall. Even more so when it's such a juicy topic as pornography and free speech vs. American justice. A fabulous Woody Harrelson and one of the greatest roles of Courtney Love, who has fallen off the face of the earth over time. ()

inglés After more than two decades, I revisited this Forman film and decided to bump up the rating by an extra star. It's not that I suddenly find the movie to be a masterpiece. Today, I wasn't fixated on the execution as much. I threw in that fifth star as a nod to the film's message. The passing of Larry Flynt in 2021 made me reflect. Larry Flynt may have been in the business of adult entertainment (not that I hold it against him), but he had a vision that I respected, and that vision seems all but extinct today. Or it will be soon. Ultimately, this film feels more relevant to me now than it did when it came out. / Lesson learned: When faced with pseudo-moralists, arguments are like casting pearls before swine. ()

inglés This is a movie that beautifully shows the American patheticness that hides behind pretense and false values, to the point that it's almost unbelievable. Larry Flynt, although definitely not a person according to my taste, comes out as a hero, and rightfully so. Do people ever realize that the values they should embrace should actually be upheld? ()
