The Night Of

If you read the Storyline, you’ve spoiled the first episode for yourself… Having a bad day? A perfect illustration of the environment supported by realistic dialogs in a slow drama about one very strange murder. After watching the first episode, my expectations are very high. The unobtrusive beginning leads to a psychological whirl in the hands of the police. Who, why, how, me? I look forward to what happens next… In the end, something between a court and prison drama, interspersed with treating eczema on Turturro’s feet. HBO means quality and detailed investigation – from several different directions – engrosses you and thanks to the excellent cast, does not let go. Whether you are watching Michael Kenneth Williams ruling an entire prison or John Turturro buying up an entire pharmacy. There is also humor, but also levity, but the judicial machinery is depressing, crushing and fundamentally built on bad intentions. Here and there, humanity prevails, but so what? Riz Ahmed does a great job and his transformation is convincing. Balanced, sophisticated. (21.07.2016)

HBO gave the world another great TV show. A show that offers the interesting story of a guy whose world went topsy-turvy overnight. But he was lucky enough that he met a bunch of people who want to put the effort in and do something about his life. And these people put in absolutely perfect acting performances, including the guy. You see, Riz Ahmed presents a model change of his character from a humble and shy Pakistani boy into a tough convict who is not scared even of the toughest black guy. But John Turturro portrays an excellent character as well, who was doing a great job in the main plotline, but I also liked his sad secondary plotline involving the sad and unfortunate chick. And the show offers similar complex plotlines including the police investigator, the promising lawyer and also the other lawyer who is the public prosecutor. You see this show will get everybody with its honesty, ordinariness, incredible realism, humanity and mainly it asks the question what is the value of life and how little is needed for each and every personto start seeing it completely differently that they have in their life so far. An amazing show, and although it is a court-room drama, I wasn’t bored for even a minute. (13.09.2016)

Guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? But what can happen to you in the meantime before doubts are admitted / dispelled? The oppressive to suffocating atmosphere of the series, which notices the "blind spots" of justice, is one of the experiences of the year. The Night Of is not only an impressive drama about a sharp turning point in life and one personal transformation - it is also a procedural view of how repression can awaken the instincts of a predator in a seemingly peaceful human being. A series in which everyone is a bit of a prisoner in a world suffering from incurable eczema. And the liberating performance of John Turturro. (18.12.2016)

An excellent experience that practically has no weaknesses. In the overwhelming majority of watched movies, and especially series, I find reasons for partial criticism. Here, however, when it comes to criticism, I essentially have nothing to say and, in fact, only superlatives come to mind. The script, cast, direction... well, all of it deserves praise. Even if I give a series the highest grade, I almost never have an irresistible urge to watch the next episode immediately, and I say goodbye to the series characters with a clear conscience, knowing that we will meet again in two days. But here, I felt like taking this thrilling ride in one go. Until the very last moment, it remains a surprising and immensely well-thought-out matter that combines three subgenres - classic crime, courtroom drama, and prison drama. All the settings and characters look convincing, and I didn't notice any false notes. Simply put, the series is craftsmanship of the highest quality. Overall impression: 100%. (25.09.2016)
