Flowers of Freedom

Sinopsis(1)

The peaceful, untouched nature around the Kyrgyz village of Barskon is disturbed by passing trucks. In cisterns they transport a deadly cargo – cyanide. A Canadian company uses it to recover gold from the rocks in the nearby Kumtor mine. In 1998, one of the trucks had an accident and the lethal substance spilled into the local river, killing dozens of people and poisoning hundreds. It is now seven years later and the government still has not responded to the tragedy. Several local women decide to fight for the victims' rights on their own. The film not only follows the women's clash with the administration but also their personal stories, which play out against the backdrop of broader political change in Kyrgyzstan. (One World)
