Documental / Realizado entre los años 1975 y 1982, "Koyaanisqatsi" -primera parte de lo que sería luego una trilogía formada por Koyaanisqatsi (1982), Powwaqatsi (1988) y Naqoyqatsi (2002)- es un singular documental que refleja la colisión entre dos mundos obligados a convivir: por un lado la vida de los hombres en la sociedad moderna, la vida urbana y occidental, llena de tecnología, ciencia y consumismo. Por otro la naturaleza y el medio ambiente del planeta Tierra. Sin voz humana, tan sólo con el poder de las imágenes y la banda sonora minimalisa de Philip Glass, Godfrey Reggio presentó este documental ante 5000 personas el 4 de Octubre de 1982 en el Radio City Hall de Nueva York, convirtiéndose al instante en un documental de culto. Koyaanisqatsi could just as well mean "Man is an idiot" in the Hopi language, because that is exactly the message of this film. After a few minutes, the initial fascination with nature is replaced by a depressing amazement at what numbskulls homo sapiens are, that we can outdo even lemmings in our self-destructive tendencies... And so on. While more than half of the atmosphere is created by Glass's great music, the material recorded and collected by Godfrey Reggio is not far behind. The ending with the rocket definitely kept me in my chair and made me sit there motionless for a good ten minutes after the credits.

A document without words, only music, camera, and everything interconnected. A document about the world, and a document that has something to say. Without words. It has depth, and that must be appreciated. Man has changed the world according to his own image, but the question is whether the image is better than what existed before man. No, certainly not everyone would agree on that.
