Szabó Mari, the actress of a country-theatre does her best to be like her idol, Marilyn Monroe. Yet as Huston says it in the introductory interview: Marilyn Monroe was herself, while her devotees all want to be something else. Mari is ousted from her usual roles and her love-affair alike by a new member of the company. A test shooting at the Budapest Film Studio comes in very handy. After the unpleasant good-bye party at the company, the test shooting is a humiliating, pitiable failure. Yet the director still discovers something in the actress, and his interrogations greatly contribute to the mounting tension. The scenes of the actress' stay in Budapest are the scenes of further failures with previous husbands and previous lovers. It is unexpectedly revealed that Szabó Mari has been selected as the protagonist of a film to be made of her life, i.e. she will be able to play herself. This is also her birthday present.
