En 1968 el navegante aficionado Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth) se impone un objetivo épico: ganar la Sunday Times Golden Globe Race dando la vuelta al mundo en su velero, en solitario y sin escalas. En tierra deja a su mujer Claire (Rachel Weisz), su mayor defensora, que como él se enfrenta en solitario a otra aventura: seguir adelante con sus hijos y sin el amor de su vida.
