Pomme (Isabel Huppert en su primer papel protagonista, con 22 añitos), es una sencilla e introvertida joven cuya vida transcurre en París, entre su trabajo como aprendiza de peluquera y la casa en la que vive con su madre, que es tendera. Una compañera de trabajo le propone pasar una semana de vacaciones en la costa, y allí conoce a François, un chico universitario de buena familia. Comienza entre ellos una historia de amor, que se topa con los primeros inconvenientes: se van a vivir juntos al pequeño e incómodo cuarto de estudiante de él, y ella continúa con su trabajo de peluquera. A strange drama that takes it upon itself to tell an awfully human story. It reeks of French poeticism which I personally like much more when it’s got legendary French noir actors instead of two chicks that don’t know what to do with their lives and so they fall in love with just about everybody and in the end, everybody loses.

I confess that it was the film Elle that showed me how interesting of an actress Isabelle Huppert is. The Lacemaker showed me again how great she was back when she was around twenty-four years old. Confident, though seemingly unremarkable, the performance is mature and clearly stands out above her fellow acting colleagues.
