Sinopsis(1)

1825. In Europe, the French Revolution has come and gone, and with it, a dream of equality, fraternity and liberty. Though little has changed in the feudal system, more serfs are daring to criticize their masters. In one noble household near Hanover, the young maid Gisela is able to pour her heart out only to the manservant Walter; the two had been raised together after being rescued by the count.

Trouble arises when Gisela is punished much too severely by the countess, and incites Walter to escape with her to America. Walter refuses, since the kindly count has raised his status and appointed him forester. Fuming with hatred for Walter is the Count's good-for-nothing son, who resents his father for preferring the honest Walter to himself. Moreover, the count's son is obsessed with Gisela, who roundly rejects him.

When Gisela is caught helping a desperate farmhand on the run for stealing bread, she now becomes the target of the young nobleman's evil schemes, which also incriminate Walther. Confronted by torture and death, Gisela and Walter decide to break with their homeland and set off for America – to what they hope is a land with shores of gold and a promise of freedom, a land where they and their love can flourish...
