Basada en la vida de David Helfgott, un niño prodigio, Shine examina su tortuosa vida, desde su infancia dominada por su estricto padre, hasta llegar a sus crisis nerviosas cuando es adulto. Cuando es aceptado en una prestigiosa escuela de música en Londres, la Royal College of Music, David se siente capaz de huir de su padre y arriesgarlo todo por su única pasión, la música. Pero el rechazo de su padre y las presiones de su trabajo, acaban sumiéndole en una enfermedad mental. Sólo el amor de una mujer que le comprende de verdad, puede salvarle y devolverle a la sociedad para que ésta disfrute con su música. (Disney España)

Un drama biográfico muy convincente basado en las mejores interpretaciones, no sólo del oscarizado Geoffrey Rush, sino también del joven Noah Taylor y del excelente Armin Mueller-Stahl. Sobre el tema de «cómo crear un genio musical usando mano dura y qué consecuencias eso trae», Shine, el resplandor de un genio es un poco precursora del thriller Whiplash, aunque aborda el material de una forma mucho más convencional y comedida, lo que no veo como algo malo. Realmente hay muy poco que reprocharle. [KVIFF 2022]

I saw the movie "Shine" once as a school screening, probably just on television in the classroom, but even back then it left a strong impression on me. And that impression was repeated when I watched it again. Both Geoffrey Rush and Noah Taylor, as well as Armin Mueller-Stahl, play in an absolutely captivating way that deeply touches you.

An incredible film about a pianist who was driven beyond normal by music. This riveting opus by the brilliant Geoffrey Rush is not just some neat "unfortunate genius" scheme that has been on display a lot lately - it's a story that has the gift of tearing down the most common human things. Art is a sacrifice. Sometimes too cruel.

A classic biopic about a strange genius, one would like to say after reading the content... But it's a mistake. Luckily! Shine is an unusual spectacle in several ways. I was mainly interested in the different non-Hollywood presentation of the story - the script didn't automatically make me feel sympathy for the main character, didn't make me hate David's father, didn't lead me to anything, didn't try to wring tears from me. On the contrary, it left everything to my discretion to make my own picture and keep watching. Very refreshing. The other unusual thing is Geoffrey Rush's performance. He appears in the film for some forty minutes in total, yet his performance is so masterful that there can be no doubt that his role is the main one. In short, it shines. And last but not least, I can't ignore the direction, because I will probably never forget the scene with Rachmaninov's concerto.
