Dr. Bajor Kálmán, the still handsome lawyer in his 50s, falls in love with his friend's secretary, the 20-year-old Vali. He wins her from her suitor, Tibor, and proposes to her. His daughter, Mimi, who is the same age as the bride, uses her female wit in order to prevent this marriage which because of the great age difference is of rather doubtful consequences and which is frowned upon by public opinion. She allies herself with her father's friend, uncle Árpád, and the two pretend to have fallen in love. But the game becomes serious, and uncle Árpád falls truly in love with pretty little Mimi. He asks for her hand, at which point Bajor Kálmán realizes what an error he was about to commit, understanding that he is just as old for Vali as Árpád is old for Mimi. He gives up his plan to marry.
