El director Tobe Hooper junto al productor ganador del Oscar Steven Spielberg y el maestro de los efectos especiales George Lucas nos presentan una inmersión en el mundo de los sobrenatural. La vida resulta muy tranquila para la familia Freeling hasta el día en que una multitud de fuerzas de otro mundo invade la paz de su hogar. Los intrusos no son precisamente cordiales y si la desafortunada familia Freeling no abandona su hogar serán arrastrados a una pesadilla que va más allá de lo imaginable.
