Double Play

This film version adds a contemporary perspective to the prize-winning book Double Play by Curaçaoan writer Frank Martinus Arion. We take a retrospective look behind-the-scenes of the fatal domino game in the 1970s through the eyes of Ostrik, now fifty, who is a son of one of the players. Because his Dutch wife has left him, he now returns with mixed feelings after a long absence to his birthplace, where his father was a good-for-nothing taxi driver who was very good at finding his way to rum and the red light district, Campo Alegre. As a guileless boy of eleven, Ostrik witnesses a tragedy that will mark him for life. The harder the dominos hit the table, the more suspicion flares up. Friendship changes to rivalry, but in this macho world, it's up to two desperate yet courageous women to turn things around. This adultery drama is also a story about pride and humiliation, money and love, ambition and hope. (International Film Festival Rotterdam)
