Verkaranta

Between 1976 and 1982, almost all of the redbrick buildings of Verkaranta, the oldest factory in Tampere, were demolished amidst ferocious opposition and construction disputes. In the end, the old dyehouse and the head office by the Tammerkoski Rapids were preserved. At the end of the 1980s, the site of the old factory saw the rise of several new buildings, including the tower hotel Ilves, the Koskikeskus shopping centre, as well as new residential buildings. A tightly focused, concise and experimental documentary about the transformation of the riverside from an industrial hive into a modern marketplace. For six years, a still camera placed on-site documented the transformation of the area of Verkatehdas in Tampere. (Tampere Film Festival)
