Harlots

I'm mapping out what I might enjoy from a Hulu production. Kirsten Dunst has stated that she watches Harlots because they remind her of her film Marie Antoinette, which is the best recommendation of all. :) The series is also based on the book by Hallie Rubenhold "The Covent Garden Ladies: Pimp General Jack and the Extraordinary Story of Harris's List" which is a very interesting look at the real "Harris's List of Covent Garden Ladies," a periodical published between 1757 and 1795, dealing annually with the prostitutes working in the infamous part of London. A realistic foundation is the most important thing and it has paid off greatly here. (10.01.2019)

Hulu has managed to produce a truly compelling drama, comparable, for example, to the Australian series Underbelly: Razor. Like in Razor, we follow the struggles between two public houses, but this time in pre-1789 London. The Libertines were not only perverts in France. The first season is fast, dynamic, and interesting. The combination of those rococo costumes and the modern music works and with each new drama, you can root for those bitches more and more. Anyone who enjoys high-level adult entertainment will be satisfied. (19.01.2019)

At the beginning of the season, I wasn't sure if it would be fun again, the problems of the two shouting houses were too serious and there were too many of them and people started to get lost in them. But as soon as Lady Isabella Fitzwilliam (Liv Tyler) came on the scene, everything took on exactly the tone I expected. The incredible arrogance of Lydia Quigley and the huge heart of Margaret Wells crystallized into a spectacle I would not have expected. Charlotte Wells became for a time the daughter of Quigley and attracted the interest of both Lord and Lady Fitzwilliam. Lucy fell in love with her keeper for the first time, but unfortunately, Lord Fallon's true face was not the sanctimonious one it would seem at first glance. And so on and so forth, Harlots must be seen, not just read about. (25.01.2019)

The year has come and gone and the life of prostitutes in London continues. Some have found their own way to survive, others are addicted. Two major players from past series are on their backs. But for how long? The biggest surprise is Liv Tyler and her Lady Fitz, who has found a best friend among the sales ladies and is gracefully struggling with life. The Wells ladies (the excellent Jessica Brown Findlay and Eloise Smyth) are very skilled and run the business in a way that would make their mother proud... but this relative peace is short-lived. Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) is looking forward to the new generation, which is perfectly supported by a new group of blackmailers. It's an incredible experience as a viewer. You get to practice new vocabulary, and unfamiliar slang, and have a lot to do to stay on top of things from such intense turmoil. There are not a lot of spicy scenes, only a few sexy shots. Life before 1789 wasn't easy for anyone and there's plenty to think about here, even the escapes to America play their part. (31.03.2020)
