Able-bodied seaman Kristian has landed a permanent job on a trawler after his probation period. His wife is thrilled and he prepares a celebratory dinner. Suddenly the doorbell rings. She says that it is a man called Tommy. Kristian asks him briskly how he even got hold of his address and adds that he never wants to see him here again. As he is about to slam the door in his face, Tommy manages to say that Peter is in the hospital. We soon find out that Peter is Kristian’s stepfather. Kristian sets off to Gripkskov in Northern Denmark to visit him where he lies dying of prostate cancer. Kristian left his hometown five years ago in the aftermath of a traffic accident in which his stepbrother was killed. Kristian had been riding his motor scooter with his stepbrother sitting behind him. The stepbrother’s family has never forgiven for him the tragic death and this becomes dramatically apparent at Peter’s bedside when ex-girlfriend Trine and, soon after, mother Hanne turn up. Outraged, they ask him what he thinks he is doing here. Peter urges him to stay, though Kristian had only intended to spend a few hours with him. “Hanne and Trine need you”, he says.
