In the fall of 2017 Near Eastern reporter and documentarist Jana Andert set out for Mosul, then occupied by Islamic State fighters. She went on her own, without support from the foreign media for which she normally works. With the Golden Division, an elite unit of the Iraqi Army, she risked her life for eight months on the front lines of the battle. During this time she got used to gunfire and rocket explosions, experienced the detonations of suicide bombers and cars packed with explosives, and comforted families grieving their lost loved ones – men, women, and children. A shock therapy of news coverage from the war front. An unflinching report from a city in ruins, robbed of its soul by one of the worst catastrophes of modern times. Infinite heaps of rubble evoke their distress, and the soundtrack of explosions and gunfire truly contributes to the feeling of authenticity to such an extent that you feel as if you were in the epicenter of the battle. The shots of terrified refugees and wounded children are emotionally impactful, there is no doubt about that. On the other hand, the courage of Jana Andert logically has its limits. In certain shots, the soldiers of the Golden Division seem to be showing off for the camera, and elsewhere they most likely restrain their emotions in front of the camera. I would expect the reporter to try to get "under the skin" of the soldiers more, to encourage them to provide valuable personal testimonies. The informative commentary also could have been more extensive. In general, it is a documentary that attacks more on emotions than bombarding the viewer with information and immersing them deeper into the issues. Personally, I prefer the latter, so for me, my overall impression is only 65%.
