Yuxing Ye, a girl born in a mountain village during the 1970s, was given away at birth to a childless couple because her parents wanted a boy. When this couple did give birth on their own, Yuxing was again given up for adoption, this time by Xin Ye, who, unfortunately, dies of cancer when the girl is but 10. On her deathbed, Xin Le begs her sister, Lan Ye, to take care of the child. A difficult request given Lan Ye's precarious financial situation. By now Yuxing is old enough to realize that no one is going to take care of her if she doesn't take care of herself. She decides to concentrate on her present.
