Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet) stars as Dan Morgan, the infamous real-life 1800’s outlaw, an Irish immigrant working as a gold digger in the treacherous Australian brush. When his comrades reject him, Morgan resorts to stealing horses, and is caught and sentenced to jail. After years of abuse and brutality, Morgan is released, and falls back into his outlaw ways. I was quite pleasantly surprised by how cruel this film is. The gore is surprising and well-done from the very beginning. The whole film then leads to the fact that it is actually self-destruction, which is interestingly utilized with all the Australian environment. The character that Hopper plays deserves to be parodied, but at the same time, it is intriguingly tragic.
