Alicia regresa a la siniestra mansión de la que huyó siendo una niña – un hogar que nunca ha albergado infancias felices – convertida ahora en una joven madre de familia. The Spanish movie The Influence has a relatively slow start. However, once it gets a little pumped up, it gets good and dark in the second half and delivers exactly what you would expect from a contemporary horror movie. It would definitely be worth seeing at the cinema once even though you probably would not want to watch it again.

Lazy Spanish rip-off of Heritage. While last year’s gem by Ari Aster had a well though-out concept, a surprising script, director’s self-confidence and excellent performances, which together resulted in a superb film, with a similar premise, van Boekholt is hardly able to achieve at least some modicum of genre functionality.

Spanish people and horror genre has been a good combination for a long time. But from time to time it takes a bad turn. La Influencia was quite a mess. Regarding the story line I was lost and wondering, thinking and guessing. The makers turned this ghost type of horror movie on its head and many times chose abstract shots over at least some quality. In the director’s defense some parts of this horror are at least bloody which is not a norm today. But it won’t saveit from me rating this movie with 2 stars.
