Mon frère, ma soeur vendus pour quelques lires

In post-war Italy, catholic relief organisations put up thousands of orphaned children for adoption by American families. In exchange for substantial sums, that is, which gave the adoptions in the eyes of many a nasty tinge. The documentary filmmaker Basile Sallustio, who lives and works in Belgium, discovered this episode of suppressed Italian modern history through his aunt Pia. As it turned out, Pia was the only child that her father, after her mother‘s death, had not put forward for adoption. Forty years later, she starts a search for her brother Domenico and her sisters Pasqualina and Antonietta. After her decision to track her lost relatives, she finds out that right before leaving for her American adoptive parents, Pasqualina has passed away. In the second part of his documentary, Sallustio concentrates on the way in which Pia resigns to her past. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
