La joven Pinky Rose, recién llegada a California desde lo más profundo de Tejas, se incorpora para trabajar en un balneario para ancianos. Es una chica aniñada, tímida y claramente desequilibrada. Los jefes del centro confían su aprendizaje a "Millie" Lammoreaux, otra empleada que viene de Tejas. Mujer ultrasofisticada que se cree muy popular, Millie se considera como la elegancia personificada. Pero en realidad es una desgraciada a la que todo el mundo ignora, desde sus compañeras de trabajo hasta sus vecinos.
