Death Race: La carrera de la muerte (2008)

inglés A really excellent piece with sharpened visuals and excellent special effects. Jason Statham as the wrongly convicted Jensen Ames ruthlessly dispatches all the "competition" in an army-equipped Mustang, even manages to get his revenge while trying to break free again, aided by the beautiful Natalie Martinez. The choice of music is also praiseworthy. A very strong 4 stars.

Sin City (Ciudad del pecado) (2005)

inglés After the not-so-great Spy Kids trilogy, Robert Rodriguez reached for the comic book source material and, in collaboration with Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino, made one of his best, if not his best film. The visuals are absolutely perfect, wonderfully capturing the raw atmosphere of the comic book. There are no issues with the cast either – Rourke ("That there is one damn fine coat you're wearin’.") Owen, Willis, Del Toro... What’s more, the individual stories are told with a reasonable amount of hyperbole, so it's nice that Sin City doesn't take itself too seriously. And that's part of the reason I’m giving it 5 stars – the film doesn't mess around, it's a faithful copy of Miller's comic, it impresses with elaborate visuals and a more than pleasant cast, and the direction does exactly what is expected of it. The few apt dry lines are just icing on the cake. 95%

Jackie Brown (1997)

inglés Quentin simply knows what he’s doing and that probably hasn’t changed. Another example of great filmmaking done in a way that is completely original and simply "Tarantino-esque". A great cast, a perfect soundtrack, the same scene repeated from different perspectives and yet not boring, Tarantino-esque "cool dialogue"... It may not be a second Pulp Fiction, but it's a very successful Across 110th Street!!!

Carrie (1976)

inglés Annoyingly truncated and altered compared to the book, but still very much above average. Maybe Carrie White's psyche and early childhood deserved a little more space, but then I could nitpick everything. :) The book by Stephen King – 5 stars, the film by Brian De Palma – 4 stars.

Adiós pequeña, adiós (2007)

inglés Gritty and depressing, yet very well done and a truly amazing directorial debut from Ben Affleck. I think words like "hopelessness" and "inescapability" more than aptly describe Gone Baby Gone. Cinematically it's truly brilliant (writing, directing, editing, actors), to the point where it makes you wonder if it wasn’t completely robbed by the Academy. The brotherly collaboration worked out perfectly, with Casey Affleck excelling as the young private detective and Ben Affleck more than pleasantly surprising as the director. Gone Baby Gone is not a "nice" movie. In the flood of all sorts of Hollywood tearjerkers, it is a stark reminder of what we call reality in today's world.

Planet Terror (2007)

inglés A girl with a machine gun for a leg, hectoliters of blood and pus, Bruce Willis as Bin Laden's killer, absolutely perfect and insane music + absolutely disgusting zombies... In the end it makes for a really strange hash that totally captivated me... I like novel, crazy, and original approaches or ideas, that's why I adore so much the work of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino (his role here was not great, but his "toolbox" was interesting...). It's a shame that both directors didn't expand the Grindhouse project (I could easily handle ten films from each of them) and each made only one of these crazy things. Absolutely the ultimate unleashed fun, for which I thank both gentlemen very much. After the third screening, a clear 5 stars, "Never liked that son of a bitch. Was as useless as a pecker on a pope."

Escondidos en Brujas (2008)

inglés After the third screening I have to push it and go for the full 5 stars, with In Bruges becoming one of my favorite pieces. This really rather dark comedy will win you over with its quirky humor, beautiful shots of various corners of Bruges (I have been to Belgium, but only to Brussels; Bruges beckons me now), beautiful music, and great cast. A first-class debut from writer and director Martin McDonagh.
