Sid y Nancy (1986)

inglés I don’t really care that Johnny Rotten disagrees with the way this story is told. I believe that it might have happened somewhat like it is portrayed in this movie even if it is not precise. It was an incredible time and Sex Pistols were something new and different and continue to shock even after all these years. Someone might say that Chloe Webb as Nancy is incredibly overacting. But I quite liked how she portrayed her role. I know that her behavior in this movie had a reason. Quite the contrary, Gary Oldman portrays his role perfectly, I almost had a problem to recognize him. Well, not everyone is as lucky to get a role of Sid Vicious as a young actor and Churchill as a mature actor. A movie that oscillates between extremes but if you are interested in this era and environment I doubt you would be disappointed.

La fuerza del cariño (1983)

inglés A solid American drama telling a family story throughout the years, which was really lucky to get such actors to portray the main characters. In the beginning I was quite unsure whether I would like Terms of Endearment. After a while I got used to the characters and the character I liked the most was the one portrayed by Jack Nicholson. He is capable to own the movie even when cast in supporting role. But it would not be fair to say that the movie stands or falls by him alone. There are others, for example, Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Danny DeVito, Jeff Daniels and John Lithgow and everyone plays an important part in the story even though some of them appear in the movie only for a few minutes. In any case, life can play even such tricks with our destinies as those portrayed in this movie. It is not fair but on the other hand this type of story is the most powerful.

Las chicas del calendario (2003)

inglés A pleasant English comedy with a pleasantly light premise that is standard for this type of comedies and what’s more, it is based on a true story. If you add in likeable characters and beautiful English countryside you get this movie that is ideal for your leisure at the end of the working week.

Detektiverne (2013)

inglés I am not surprised that this kind of family movie was produced in Denmark of all places. A bunch of kids wise beyond their years that behave exactly like adults. Not to mention that when I was their age I had no idea what cocaine was but they are fighting the drug dealers using jujitsu. Unbelievable. Quite a failure on the part of the Danes.

Lord Jim (1965)

inglés Peter O´Toole with his blue eyes adds a certain charm to this movie. If they had cut on the philosophizing it would have been a nice adventure movie full of spectacular moments.

Adiós, Bonaparte (1985)

inglés I wouldn’t guess that Egypt would produce an epic period movie with a lot of mass scenes, let alone Egypt during the 1980s’. Youssef Chahine knew very well what he wanted to produce. And taking into consideration that the year was 1985 I have to say that it is quite a nice piece. The funny thing is, of course, that the Egyptians act as the most proud nation of them all and even local kid heroes are able to kick Napoleon’s butt. Nevertheless I’m not French so it doesn’t offend me and I don’t know the historical facts of Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt well enough to tell what was true and what was not. The nationalism was extreme in this movie but from the film-making point of view it wasn’t bad at all.

Al otro lado de la ley (2018)

inglés For me, S. Craig Zahler has become something a newly emerged American filmmaker, whose every next film in an incredible experience. This is the third time I meet with his craft, and it is once again the case. The precise dialogues might be not as filled with pop-cultural references as those in Tarantino’s movies, but they are wonderfully on point. Add in the brutality that doesn’t pull any punches. At the same time, it makes you wonder how far a film can go and not to cross the line. Here there’s at least one scene that crosses it, and I think the director likes to include something like this in his every movie. Moreover, it is interesting that he makes his movies based on his own script and uses his own music as accompaniment; he might be something of a genius. Moreover, the movie features the perfect duo of Gibson and Vaugh, who look like a throwback to the 1990s. Simply fantastic, what can I say. Had ti been a bit shorter, I’d have given it five stars. I understand that the director made some scenes longer on purpose for the atmosphere, but sometimes it was too much. Anyhow, it remains a decent action movie, one of the most distinctive ones in the recent years.

The Exorcism of Molly Hartley (2015)

inglés A brutal exorcism B movie, which is off to a terrible start, but after the opening drinking scene in the bar the quality thankfully increases. Moreover, I liked that the film didn’t satisfy itself with the exorcism itself, and tried to be more ambitious than that. A nice B movie chill-out with everything it entails.

Dos Polis En Apuros (2006)

inglés The specific features of buddy action movies are a charismatic duo of detectives, funny jokes and original action. This movie doesn’t have any of the above. At some moments I felt I was watching a worse version of Alarm for Cobra 11 – The Highway Police. The “action-packed” ending only confirmed my impression.

Anomalisa (2015)

inglés I took me a long time to convince myself to give Anomalisa a try. It is a work by Charlie Kaufman, and his films are far from normal. To make an animated flick, where the animation is moreover not exactly nice to look at, about a guy suffering from depression, turning this into the gloomiest animated movie I’ve ever seen, soaking every single shot of this movie in the purest gloom, takes some balls. And Charlie Kaufman’s got them. And he showed us that it can work. But only in the case when you’re ready for a unique experience and have seen quite a lot of movies throughout your life. An interestingly portrayed depression of one animated man full of absurdities and intriguing thoughts.
