At 23, Bill (Jojo Bapteise Whiting) just wants to make something of himself. Whether it’s syphoning gas, delivering goods or breeding Poodles, he is determined to carve his way to the “American Dream”. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Matho (LaDainian Crazy Thunder) can’t wait to become a man. Desperate for approval from his young, unavailable father, a series of destructive decisions turns Matho’s life upside down and he finds himself unequipped to deal with the harsh realities of the adult world. A powerful tale of life, hope and belonging created over a period of four years in collaboration with members of the Pine Ridge Reservation. (Picturehouse Entertainment)

Una inmersión creíble y muy civil en el mundo de los jóvenes sioux modernos que siguen buscando su lugar en el mundo décadas después de que sus antepasados fueran irrevocablemente desarraigados. Está bellamente compuesta, notablemente interpretada y entiendo lo que intenta decir, pero debo añadir cínicamente que, teniendo en cuenta su duración, simplemente carece de un enfoque más determinado para lograr el objetivo que me habría atrapado como espectador en el final. I was a little worried that it would be an endless and boring movie. The opposite is true. I hated all the characters at first and eventually grew to like them. It's a film about finding values and starting points that are not familiar to Europeans. The story is really beautiful and shot so realistically that you want to follow the characters and help them, even though they are quite stubborn. Movies set in rural America tend to be slow and revolve around similar themes, but this is an absolute blast that guarantees a rush of emotion and entertainment.

I don't see anything revelatory or interesting in this film at all, although the reviews suggested that it would be one of the more substantial screenings of the festival. An ordinary American indie, the kind we get dozens of every year, which after a few months, when they have passed through the festival circuit, nobody remembers anymore. And just after the screening of the Czech BANGER., I guess I wasn't in the mood for any more badass drug dealers. The only thing I would acknowledge is that Jojo Bapteise Whiting is a likeable guy and an acting revelation. (56th KVIFF)
