Pierre Armsler, the mayor of the Swiss mountain town of Saint-Luc Pierre remarries after the death of his wife. His new wife, Jeanne Dutois, brings to their marriage a daughter from a previous relationship. The man also has children – a son and daughter. The son, Jean, loved his mother deeply and misses her terribly. He hates his father's new wife and won't let her replace his beloved mother. And he makes his step-sister Arlette's life a living hell. The film is an important example of realist film from the silent era. The psychological drama captivates with the beautiful natural scenery of Switzerland, where the film was largely shot. This work was awarded for its emotional urgency and for the "unusual authenticity of its natural and social environment". French film journalist Georges Sadoul described it as one of the best films of Jacques Feyder. (Zlín Film Festival)
