Sinopsis(1)
Eddie Felson (Newman) es un joven arrogante y amoral que frecuenta con éxito las salas de billar. Decidido a ser proclamado el mejor, busca al Gordo de Minnesota (Gleason), un legendario campeón de billar. Cuando, por fin, consigue enfrentarse con él, su falta de seguridad le hace fracasar. El amor de una solitaria mujer (Laurie) podría ayudarlo a abandonar esa clase de vida, pero Eddie no descansará hasta vencer al campeón sin importarle el precio que tenga que pagar por ello.
