La protagonista de El amante es una adolescente, pero tiene las ideas muy claras. Proveniente de una familia humilde y de escasos recursos, esta joven se avergüenza de todo lo que la rodea: familia, compañeras de clase, profesores..., así que intenta por todos los medios aparentar lo que no es. A escondidas de su madre se pinta los labios de un color llamativo y se pone un vestido de seda. Su día a día transcurre ahora en torno a un nuevo amor, que, a diferencia de su situación actual, le otorga muchas posibilidades. Él es un chico de origen chino que tiene una familia bien posicionada, dedicada a los negocios inmobiliarios. Los jóvenes se dejan llevar por sus sentimientos y descubren el primer amor y el primer tacto entre sus cuerpos desnudos. Entre ellos existe toda la pasión, pero también un sinfín de impedimentos que hacen de esta historia algo imposible. La posición social que ocupa cada uno y las diferencias culturales se imponen al amor. (Warner Bros. España)

A captivating story with Lolita themes, which unfortunately reeks of cheapness in the most important moments. I definitely don't imagine a good love scene as a couple touching each other for the first time in bed, and the narrator's voice speaking in a manner that could be mistaken for a pornographic transcript. After the most intimate connection, the rest of the film can be summed up with the motto "when sex gets out of hand," and it doesn't have the same power as the previous plot. Many side storylines are left unresolved, including the ending itself, making it a disappointing average.

If it were just a tad more daring and visible, it would be even better. If it had been stronger towards the end and the viewer didn't feel like it was already starting to fizzle out by then. Then I would say The Lover is a great film, but as it is, it ended up falling slightly short of greatness. Still, I think Annaud had a very good theme and he handled it well.
