All 6'4" of John Wayne plays the title role, a federal agent ferreting out subversives in Hawaii. Rallying to the cause are co-stars Nancy Olson and Veda Ann Borg. And 6'7" James Arness is McLain's war-hero partner Baxter. The documentary-style story moves swiftly, with good-natured humor peppered throughout. Well, even a master gets it wrong sometimes, and the Duke got it wrong quite a lot in this case. It's such a strangely naive view of the search for communists, lacking progression, and not at all helped by the voiceover narration, possibly used only because recording sound on location didn't go well. A weak story leads to a weak impression.
