Jim Brannigan (John Wayne) es un duro policía de Chicago de origen irlandés al que no le importa saltarse las normas si eso le permite resolver sus casos. Larkin, su próximo objetivo, es un fugitivo a quien su apocado abogado, Mel Fields (Mel Ferrer), planea sacar del país. Fields lo consigue y Larkin llega a Inglaterra. Un océano, sin embargo, no es suficiente para frenar a Brannigan. Una vez en Londres, Swan (Richard Attenborough), jefe de la policía británica, le advierte que tendrá su colaboración, siempre y cuando acate sus reglas. John just fit into the 70s. Not so much in westerns, although he wasn't bad in those either, but rather in these action crime films. Almost no one would guess he belonged to those 70 years. Moreover, the confrontation of American and English, male and female, works quite well here, not to mention that it's simply fun and the story is not at all dumb.
