El rey de la montaña nos cuenta la historia de Quím, que en unas soleadas y frías Navidades conduce su coche por carreteras secundarias en busca del pueblo de su novia. Tomando un desvío, se adentra en un bosque desconocido donde se pierde. Sin razón alguna, un hombre le dispara con su rifle y Quím se ve obligado a huir. Ahí empieza una persecución donde, sin causa justificada, Quím se convierte en la presa de un grupo de cazadores anónimos. Un bosque cada vez más agobiante es el terreno de juego. Ha habido varios dramas y thrillers con este mensaje (no quiero revelar, por si van a ver la película) y este no trae nada nuevo, al contrario, puede parecer superficial. Por otro lado, sitúa el tema en el entorno no muy visto de la remota naturaleza española, y trabaja brillantemente con la tensión. En la mayoría de las imágenes no tenemos idea de quién está cazando a los protagonistas y por qué (y quienes solo huyen desesperados de las balas silbantes), lo que añade un toque místico a la película. El motor fuerte de la película es también la relación de los que huyen, que se convierte de la desconfianza inicial en la dependencia entre ellos y la necesidad de protegerse (lo que conduce a la escena probablemente más fuerte).

Another addition to the growing family of good quality Spanish (or European) horror (thrillers) with a rural setting. In terms of feeling and atmosphere, King of the Hill is somewhere between the British Wilderness and the Spanish Satan’s Blood, meaning that it’s bloody good! Another great thing about this film is seeing the nice transformation that the slasher subgenre has gone through in recent years. Where are those days when it relied mostly on the number of victims and their colourful deaths (i.e. the 1980s or the era of Scream)? I sincerely hope they are buried and forgotten. Today it’s mostly about realism, the heroes know almost from the start that they are in deep shit and the creators have them stew in that situation. As it should be. If you want to criticise, you’ll surely find something (the script at least isn’t the best), but I really enjoyed those 80 minutes. The only thing I wonder is how many more times they can use that “relatively original element” (I don’t want to spoil it) before it becomes a cliché.
