Audrey Tautou da vida a Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. La película narra los primeros años en la vida de la famosa diseñadora y refleja la rebeldía de una mujer que supo ser fiel a sus ideas y convicciones, desde su más humilde origen hasta el círculo aristocrático al que tuvo acceso, y completar su sueño en un mundo y un contexto enteramente dominado por los hombres. En París se celebró una única premiere para el público, por lo que el cine en Les Halles estaba a reventar, los empleados tuvieron que añadir más sillas. Las grandes expectativas de ver a Audrey Tautou aumentaron aún más cuando el presentador anunció que las actrices y la directora llegarían después de la función. ¿Cómo evaluar una película que ofrece un drama romántico trillado mil veces sobre una joven pobre que llega a la cima, al principio gracias a un viejo amante rico y luego también a uno joven y rico? Tal vez la directora eligió la parte más aburrida de la vida de Coco Chanel, o tal vez su vida no estuvo llena de eventos alegres y trágicos como la vida de Edith Piaf, o tal vez no puedo apreciar suficientemente esta película. Sin duda, Coco Chanel merece reconocimiento por su arduo trabajo, al final de la película se menciona que trabajó hasta su muerte y que odiaba los domingos como día de descanso. Audrey Tautou fue excelente, Marie Gillain también, los trajes son magníficos. Sin embargo, esta película no me dejó ninguna huella emocional.

Coco Before Chanel is paradoxically perfectly complementary to the film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky because it deals with exactly the period in Gabriela's life before Igor. And Audrey Tautou her a face to the version of Coco who was still a nobody, still an independent young lady stifled by the conventions of Art Nouveau society. She wasn't somebody yet, but she knew that she could achieve success by associating with the right men. Gabriela was very smart and in retrospect it seems she was emancipated as well, but she just always wanted to be independent.

This is an example that not all biographical films are absolutely captivating. Yes, Audrey Tautou played the offered role brilliantly, on the other hand, it doesn't bring much innovation and it basically just captures a dry segment of the life of a famous French fashion woman, the segment before she became so famous and respected. Hence the French title, which is much more descriptive than the dull Czech one.

Cultured, conservative, and horribly mannerist. That might not be a problem, but aren't these the very traits that Coco Chanel fought against with her work? From my point of view, Anne Fontaine has simply reduced the personality of the revolutionary to a middle-class spectacle for the readers of style magazines.
