First of two episodes about Howard Carter and his hunt for the tomb of Tutankhamun. Carter is an irascible Englishman who travels to Egypt to work as a painter but soon becomes an archaeologist. He is fascinated by Ancient Egypt and determined to make an important discovery. When evidence for Tutankhamun's tomb comes to light, Carter becomes obsessed with finding it, although few give him much chance of success. After years of searching with his patron, Lord Carnarvon, Carter eventually gazes at a sight not seen for thousands of years: the treasure of a pharoah's tomb. Interwoven with Carter's adventure is the mysterious story of the boy king Tutankhamun who, aged eight, became king, married his sister and died young. (BBC)
