En 1880 Harry Faversham (John Clements) es un joven y prometedor oficial, hijo de un general del ejército británico que se cría desde niño dentro de las tradiciones militares y dentro también de una familia en la que la cobardía es lo peor que le puede llegar a pasar nunca a nadie. Al crecer, y tras la muerte de su padre, el regimiento del que es oficial se embarca para una peligrosa misión en Egipto. Cuando le llegan las órdenes prefiere dimitir en el desempeño de sus obligaciones militares para evitar entrar en combate. Ante ésta situación, sus tres mejores amigos, oficiales como él, le regalan una pluma blanca con una tarjeta cada uno en señal de repulsa hacia su cobardía, e incluso la mujer con la que se iba a casar tampoco entiende su decisión y él mismo se hace entrega de la cuarta pluma en nombre de ella.
