Sensitive 16-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry - a housewife and golf pro in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job-and his sense of purpose he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother embark on her own adventure, as she transgresses into an affair with an older man. (IFC Films)

La ruptura de un matrimonio, y por tanto de una familia, a través de los ojos de un hijo de 14 años que, amando a su madre y a su padre por igual, tenía su seguridad anclada en ella. Una película sobre la variante de crecer más rápido de lo que un joven desea. Paul Dano sigue íntima y lentamente un giro del destino bastante convencional, pero con tanta sensibilidad que parece autobiográfico para él. Carey Mulligan está excelente. [Cannes]

Paul Dano stepped on a path to be a director and as his debut he presented a small, intimate movie that emanates family tragedy and personal confession. It wasn’t bad but I was more interested in the Montana visuals which looked epic in some shots including the moments when the son watches the forest burn. That was also the most powerful scene in the whole movie. I pitied the nature more that the relationship between Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal itself. Sadly the movie was about a family falling apart and not about the nature. Nevertheless Carey and Jake weren’t bad therefore the movie deserves the 3 stars rating. An interesting independent American movie that however doesn’t stand out from other movies of this kind.

Un creador ambicioso como Paul Dano se estrena como director y hay que decir que es un drama modesto bien hecho. La historia gira en torno a un joven que consigue salvar la cara a pesar de la tumultuosa ruptura de sus padres. Paul Dano parece haber proyectado una parte de sí mismo en ella. Algunas escenas se llevan a límites muy incómodos en cuanto a la relación de los personajes, lo que profundiza sentimientos verdaderamente angustiosos. Todo se eleva por las muy buenas interpretaciones de Jake Gyllenhaal y Carey Mulligan. [KVIFF 2018]
