Luisa Llorente (Silvia Abascal), una reconocida experta en la valoración de mansiones antiguas, desaparece sin dejar rastro tras recibir el encargo de ir a tasar la legendaria y misteriosa mansión Valdemar. Maximilian (Eusebio Poncela), presidente de la compañía para la que trabaja Luisa, contrata los servicios del detective Nicolás Tramel (Óscar Jaenada) para que la encuentre. No es la primera desaparición. Poco tiempo atrás otro tasador llamado Orquicia - compañero de Luisa y amigo del detective Tramel - también se esfumó cuando le enviaron a valorar el contenido de la mansión Valdemar; sin embargo, a la compañía INMOBERANCE, el destino de este empleado parece traerle sin cuidado. El detective se traslada al lugar de los hechos y emprende un viaje al pasado en el que le acompaña la arrogante Doctora Cerviá, presidenta de la fundación Valdemar, quien le pone en antecedentes del caso y relata la tragedia de Lázaro (Daniele Liotti) y Leonor Valdemar (Laia Marull), el matrimonio que habitaba la casa de la leyenda allá por el año de 1880. Pero la tragedia de esa pareja de vida aparentemente normal fue consecuencia de unos hechos espeluznantes relacionados con la celebración del llamado Rito de Dunwich, una puerta al conocimiento y a la realización de toda pretensión humana y el detective Kramer tendrá que desentrañar el inquietante pasado para intentar resolver el no menos escalofriante presente. The Valdemar Legacy: On the one hand we have the TV-ness, the weaker visual effects and the strangely unfinished story from the present day. On the other hand, however, a very good atmosphere (a combination of great cinematography and music), a gripping story set in the past, which resembles Branagh's Frankenstein in its tragic conception, plus the supporting characters Aleister Crowley (!) and Bram Stoker (!!!), and of course "inspired by H. P. Lovecraft". According to the previews, there are much, much bigger things to come in the second part. Three and a half.

In the first thirty minutes the film tells a story set in the present (and it got me interested with a very decent atmosphere), but then it jumps to the past and spends the rest of the time laying down a mythology for the second part, without delivering any outcome for that beginning. I guess we’ll have to wait. The Valdemar Legacy at times feels very cheap (almost like made for TV) and despite the very good atmosphere of some scenes (the beginning and the climax), it was a big disappointment. I will still watch the second part, though with lower expectations.

An interesting Spanish horror that manages to build a quite good atmosphere and can captivate you, not with unnecessary jump scares, but precisely because of how the overall story is conceived. Towards the end, it becomes a little overloaded and uncertain, but I am quite curious about the continuation and it can be at least as well done as this first film.
