Exit Through the Gift Shop es la historia de Thierry Guetta, un excéntrico comerciante francés afincado en Los Ángeles, aficionado a grabar todo lo que ocurre a su alrededor. Un día decide ponerse tras la cámara para realizar una película sobre el arte urbano y algunos de los más célebres artistas del street art, entre los que además de Banksy se encuentran artistas como Space Invader o Shephard Fairey. En medio de la grabación, Banksy decide darle la vuelta a la cámara y grabar a Guetta, quien alentado por el propio Banksy se adentra en el fascinante mundo del arte urbano con el alias de Mr. Brainwash. La película contiene imágenes exclusivas de Banksy y de algunos de los más importantes artistas urbanos. Exit Through the Gift Shop es mucho más que una película sobre el mundo del grafitti, aborda una interesante reflexión sobre el mercantilismo del arte en nuestros días. Una película imprescindible para conocer un poco más la obra de este genio del grafiti y del stencil que ha conseguido que algunas de sus obras hayan sido expuestas en lugares como el MOMA o la Tate Modern Gallery, colgándolas el mismo de forma clandestina. A great and extremely thoughtful work on the domestication of revolt and the commercialization of subversiveness. Painfully and humorously accurate testimony of what Mark Fisher, for example, portrays in his book “Capitalist Realism" as one of the dominant qualities of contemporary capitalism. How even radical acts such as commemorating the Guantanamo hostages at the heart of consumer carefreeness can turn into snobby posturing, this is endlessly disturbing and instigating to reflect on the role of art in the public space. Last but not least, it is also a precisely constructed "mockumentary", which testifies to Banksy's filmmaking talent.

Art has many forms and spray painting is one of them. This isn't a documentary about graffiti artists; it's a documentary about alternative artists in general, which Banksy directed and sort of oversees. It features artists I don't know, but who have something to say. People like that are interesting. For me, the documentary itself worked more as a showcase of artists than anything else.
