On one hand, it's "just" a film about a dog - and actually a cat too - but the way the film is presented, its form, how wonderfully offbeat it is when you least expect it, how the actors take it seriously yet not seriously at the same time, all of that makes it interesting, and it's definitely not just another variation of family films like Lassie.
