The first film adaptation of Kivi's bucolic comedy about a heart-broken shoemaker's son lets the peculiar characters shine in their natural village environment, closely connected with woods, marshes and lakes. Erkki Karu enriched the original story with scenes full of metaphors, flashbacks and images expressing desires and worries. (Summer Film School)
