Rodney Ascher directs this documentary about those suffering from sleep paralysis. The feature interviews eight affected people and uses expert testimonies to shed light on the condition which immobilises sufferers while they are suspended in a transitional state between being awake and asleep but are still fully aware of their surroundings. Accompanying symptoms include the appearance of terrifying hallucinatory figures, referred to as shadow men, that victims are physically unable to fight off and other disturbing visions. Sufferers discuss their various experiences of the condition and how they try to combat the afflictions on a daily basis. (Altitude Film Distribution)

As a documentary The Nightmare wasn’t very eloquent. We see several people telling us that they suffer from sleep paralysis (during which they experience terrifying visions) and that that is not at all pleasant. That’s all that can objectively be said about it. But the film gets quite a few points with the recreations of those terrifying visions. I put it on at midnight, alone in a dark room, lying on my bed, and I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t get the chills sometimes. Especially in a couple of scenes in the last half hour, where the documentarists suggest the rather unsettling thesis that sleep paralysis may be something else, like a peek into the realm of demons. That lead to a relatively restless sleep. 65%

An interesting document about a problem that personally does not bother me, but is still interesting. The portrayal is also not bad, and it is clear that there was an effort to convey nightmares to the viewer, at least to paraphrase the feelings that a person experiencing nightmares and paralysis has. Unfortunately, I do not think it was completely successful. I did not have such strong impressions from the movie.
